Crown Molding
Crown molding is an essential cabinet accessory and a popular kitchen design element. Alone or in combination with fillers and valances, it can complement contemporary, traditional or eclectic cabinet styles.
A wide variety of looks can be achieved by using varying heights of crown moldings. Molding starters and fillers can be used to add height and a more ornate look. However, take note of the size and scale of the kitchen cabinets before using this statement piece.
Designers use crown molding as a tool to create definition and dress up cabinets. One popular way to add definition is with staggered cabinets. By adding molding, each high point draws more attention while visually directing the eye across the kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose the right molding for my kitchen cabinets?
A good rule of thumb for choosing the perfect kitchen cabinet molding is to look at your door style. For example, if you’re using a modern shaker door style, go with a modern and minimal molding. Matching the style is key for the design to look cohesive. Similarly, if your kitchen design is in a raised panel style, use a decorative molding with more ornate details to match the style.
Can I install molding and trim myself, or should I hire a professional?
Yes, anyone can install their own molding and trim. This project does tend to be more complicated because you need to use a miter saw and cut moldings at a 45-degree angle. If this sounds intimidating, it’s best to call a professional for assistance.
Crown molding a finishing touch that can make or break a design. Professionals have vast experience and can also get this project done quickly. It will be well worth your investment.
How can molding and trim enhance the resale value of my home?
Crown molding and trim can increase the resale value of your home, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Focus on rooms that matter the most like the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms and the living room. Additionally, make sure the molding matches your home’s style.
Choosing a very ornate molding can scare away future buyers, so consider your home’s style along with the door style of your kitchen cabinetry before making this decision. Since every project is different, there is no way to estimate the potential resale value for molding. However, if you follow these recommendations, you should see a great return on investment.
What is the price range for kitchen cabinet molding?
On average the price range for kitchen cabinet molding ranges from $400 - $800 or more. All these figures will vary because every project is completely custom and based on the homeowner’s specific preferences. Each project will have a different quantity of wall cabinets in addition to different styles of crown molding being used. In general, however, you can assume one stick of molding is around $100.

What type of molding do you use for cabinets?
There are many types of moldings for kitchen cabinets, but the main three include crown molding, light rail and baseboard molding. Crown is for the top of wall cabinets to add height and a strong decorative touch. Light rail is typically used to add a furniture look as well as cover under cabinet lighting. And baseboard molding is great for covering up unwanted toe kicks and adding a furniture aesthetic to your kitchen or bathroom.
How do you add molding to existing cabinets?
The first step in adding molding to existing cabinets is finding the right finish. When stained cabinets are pre-existing, they have often had time to settle into a darker tone unlike brand-new wood trim. Finding a matching paint will be much less difficult. Next, find the style that works best with your current cabinets and home.
To add molding to your cabinets, you will need a miter saw, a Brad Nailer and a touch-up kit in a matching finish. Cut your kitchen cabinet moldings upside down at the angle they will hang and be careful to compensate for molding overhang on corners. After doing a dry-fit, simply align the molding on your cabinet face frame and use the Brad Nailer to attach. Once trim is installed, use the putty stick and stain or paint pen to touch up the nail holes and seams.
